AI Free Assets: Collections of Game Assets Made by Real People
Software and tools are only one piece of the game development puzzle. If you are a solo developer or working with a small team, you only have so much time in the day. Trying to program, model, draw, and compose everything yourself is a fast track to burnout.
Using pre-made assets is a fantastic way to build a prototype quickly, test your gameplay loop, and figure out if your game is actually fun. However, with the recent flood of AI-generated content on asset stores, it can be hard to find cohesive, authentic work.
If you want to support real creators and use art and audio crafted by actual humans, here are some of our favorite collections:
Kenney.nl
Often referred to as "Asset Jesus" by the indie community, Kenney (a real, highly dedicated human) has spent years manually crafting thousands of incredibly polished 2D sprites, 3D models, UI elements, and audio files. They are completely free (Public Domain/CC0). Because they are made by the same person, mixing and matching these assets gives your prototype a beautifully cohesive, human-made charm.
OpenGameArt.org
A massive, community-driven repository of free game assets. This site is a goldmine of authentic work uploaded by pixel artists, 3D modelers, and musicians who want to help indie devs succeed. Because it’s an older, established community, it remains a fantastic bastion of traditional digital art. Just be sure to check the specific licensing on each asset (some require you to credit the creator!).
Itch.io - Music & Sound Effects (PWYW)
Itch.io isn't just for publishing indie games; it's a hub for creators. This specific collection features incredible "Pay-What-You-Want" or entirely free audio packs from talented indie composers and Foley artists. Nothing beats the soul of a soundtrack composed by a real musician, and this list is the perfect place to find professional audio to give your game life.
Ready to start building? Grab some assets, credit the amazing human artists who made them, and bring your game to life!
